Greece Travel Guide|Greek Beaches and Sea

Amnissos is a long sandy beach, located east of Heraklion Crete

Amnissos is about 7 km to Heraklion, and the beach is perfect especially when north wind blows, it's quite beautiful. The beach is organized and there are umbrellas, canteens and showers.

In this region, the northeastern edge of the river valley Karteros around Paleochora or Mesovouni hill, lies the archaeological site of great ancient city Amnissos, mentioned by Homer as one of the ports of Knossos, known to characterize "ports of Aleppo."
(Amnissos was the ancient name of today Xeropotamos Karteros and the entire beach).

Amnissos excavated by Spiros Marinatos found a Minoan villa, the temple of Zeus "Thenatas" and the cult cave Eileithyia.

The mural found in the villa of Amnissos The Minoan villa found in Amnissos was two-storied, had twelve rooms, courtyard, paved lanes and sanctuary. The walls of the villa adorned the famous murals of white lilies and red (pictured), located in the Heraklion Museum.
The mansion was destroyed around 1500 BC, probably by the tidal wave that followed the eruption of Santorini.
The data supported the excavation Amnissos Sp Marinatos's theory about the destruction of the Minoan civilization from the volcano.

The sanctuary of Zeus "Thenatas" was built in the Hellenistic period, in the northwestern foot of the hill Paleochora. The Temple of Jupiter consisted of an open courtyard with a large circular altar "fire and sacrifice." An important finding of the sacred "Thenatas" were seated two eagles (the sacred animal of Jupiter), made of limestone in natural size. We have also found signs that give important historical information.

The cave of EILEITHYIAS, known to locals as "Neraidospilios" is a rare place of worship of the goddess Eileithyia, daughter of Zeus and Hera and mother of love, goddess of fertility and childbirth. The cave is located in stool or decorate Mefeze and stalagmites, columns and small lakes.
