Large areas of black pine forests of beech, fir and rare pine forest, steep ravines and raging torrents, icy mountains and a huge variety of species from the animal and plant kingdoms, characterizes Valia Kalda National Park of Pindos mountain complex in the lynx between Metsovo, Grevena and Eastern Zagoria and the boundaries between the prefectures of Grevena and Ioannina.

The Park of Pindos, total area 68,990 acres, has been characterized by both Greeks and foreign experts as a unique biological, ecological and research interest, as it combines a high aesthetic landscape value and habitat with a wide diversity of flora and fauna, diverse geomorphological composition and unique national and European scale. It includes the valley of Valia Kalda and Arkoudorema and mountains Lygkos and Montenegro and is home to rare species.

Also, within the forest there are three sources of small rivers, Valia Kalda, and the Flega Arkoudorema forming Aoos river, while the beauty of the area fill three small lakes, two of Flegkas an altitude 1900 meters and the Pit at 1,600 meters.

The valley of Valia Kalda ("warm valley") so named by Vlach, euphemistically, as it is one of the most cold and wet regions of Greece. Shows significant temperature variations during the 24 hours, with very high temperatures during the day without cloud cover and very low during the night. The clouds are high and the ordinary frosts from October to May, while the snow covers the Forest 7 to 8 months a year.

The frozen "warm valley" is covered by dense forests of pine and beech and is home to many bird species, among which are some rare birds of prey and large mammals that have disappeared from most parts of the country, while the entire region, is perhaps the most important habitat of Greece for brown bear.

Also, the Park provides shelter and protect 7 species of amphibians, 10 reptiles, 70 birds and 17 species of mammals, and so is the contribution to the protection of entomofauna. In the Territory there are 415 plant species, while the humidity of the forest has a rich mykochlorida with 86 kinds of mushrooms.

The value of this area and the need for protection has been recognized not only by declaring as a National Park since 1966, but throughout Europe, joining the network of highly protected areas in the European Community (Article 4 Directive 75/409).

The area of ​​Pindos National Park is ideal for a variety of activities such as routes for climbers and hikers, walks with 4x4 vehicles, kayaking canoeing and cycling. There are companies who can inform you and offer you the experience drivers. Also, in Valia Kalda operates a shelter for 50 persons, in "Lariani", 3 km before the village of Vovousa.
