The heart of Crete, Rethymnon, is the third largest city of the island is endowed with natural beauty and attractions that make it stand out and is a unique destination for visitors.

Rethymno is the capital of the prefecture of Crete. With 32,694 inhabitants is the third most populous city of the island after Heraklion and Chania, geographically located between them.

It is a city that manages to keep intact the original Cretan character, yet maintains the continuous development of tourism on the island, with impressive Venetian monuments, the best preserved Renaissance town in Greece, beaches, canyons and countless beauties of the surrounding area and above all, friendly and good-hearted people.

Rethymno extends to the center of the northern coast of Crete, behind the castle hill and the title of the Fortezza. Separated the old and the new city, while the coastal part of the coastal highway is Eleftherios Venizelos, the ruga maistra the Venetians.

On the other hand, the landscape is mountainous and rugged, with small villages and monasteries, gorges, caves and valleys.

A few words about the city's history

The story of Rethymno is long. The modern city is built on the same site as ancient Rithymna. In 1204, the Venetians purchased the town from the Frankish conquerors of Byzantium, and the whole island of Crete. The 16th century finds the city a great spiritual growth, and in 1669 Crete was conquered by the Turks, who led the city and life in decline.

With the independence of Crete (1897), the city begins to grow again to be interrupted by the Battle of Crete in the Second World War, in which there is enough damage. Survived, however, an important part of the (Venetian) Old City, which is today one of the best surviving Venetian cities in Greece.

After liberalization, the city began to grow again both residential and spiritually. Gave a significant boost to the installation of the Philosophical Faculty and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Crete (approx. 2,500 students), the creation of the University Library and of course tourism.

The old town, Fortezza and attractions

The Venetian harbor of Rethymnon is ideal to start his tour in the old town, with fishing boats, the famous lighthouse and its many attractions. Also from here you can head to the Fortezza, a fortress that overlooks the city, the hill of Palaiokastro and manufactured in the 16th century to protect the city after its destruction by the terrible Algerian pirate raid Ulu Ali. From there you will enjoy breathtaking views of the city, the sea, but also of Psiloritis, the highest mountain in Crete.

At the foot of the Fortezza lies the old town with its picturesque narrow streets, the freshly painted benches, courtyards with flowers and Venetian buildings.

The loggia, is one of the most interesting Venetian monuments and preserved in excellent condition. It was a meeting place of the princes and nobles the Venetian and now houses the Municipal Library in the city.

Another Venetian monument of Rethymno is the fountain Rimondi, north of the square Petichaki, which the Venetian Governor of Rethymno, Rimondi, adorned the city and simultaneously covered part of the then irrigation needs.

In a picturesque old town of narrow, also known as "long narrow" is one of the most beautiful churches, the "Lady of the Angels" or "Little Mary" is said to be separated from the Cathedral of Our Lady, Street and National Resistance is the church of San Francesco.

Other attractions of the old city is Nerantzes mosque or mosque of Gazi Hussein, Historical and Folklore Museum of Rethymno, the Great Gate or Porta Guora, which is the grand entrance of the fortifications after the extension of the town of Rethymnon, Kara Musa Mosque of Pasha and several Venetian mansions.

In the coastal strip in Rethymnon there are also many restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy the food and coffee overlooking the Cretan Sea.

It can be entered in the fall, but the weather still allows us some diving in the beautiful beaches, whether you prefer the organized or the most picturesque secluded coves.

Front and east of the city lies a vast sandy beach which starts from the castle in the harbor, while a little further east are the beaches Sfakaki and Scaletta. Other beaches are Panormos, the tourist resort of Bali, Plakias, Agia Galini and the Diocese and of the best beaches of the prefecture is Preveli in southern Crete.
