Archaeological Museum of Heraklion in terms of content is one of the most important archaeological museums in the world and is considered the second most important after-the-Museum of Athens in Greece.

In this Museum one can view the entire Minoan civilization, the oldest civilization of Europe, which flourished on Crete around 2000 BC. 

   Inside the halls of the Archeological Museum "parading" the culture of the island, starting from the Neolithic and reaches the last Roman and early Christian times. A civilization, following the course of you stay marveling at the extraordinary beauty of art and rare creations.

   The treasures of the museum come mainly from central and eastern Crete and exposed in 20 halls, which are ordered in such a way as to facilitate in the "continuous process" visit.
The interior entrance of the Museum (Photo: June 2004) The remarkable findings come mainly from the excavations in the last 80 years in various Minoan cities and towns of central Crete (Knossos, Phaistos, Agia Triada, Malia, Tylissos, Archanes) in the Gulf of Mirabello at Minoan sites in eastern Crete (Palekastro, Zakros Praisos etc.), the Minoan sacred cave (Ideon Cave, Cave of Kamares, Dikteon Cave), the domed tombs of Messara and other Minoan sites.
   The excavations brought to light these priceless treasures with stubbornness, knowledge and enthusiasm of archaeologists and exposed classified chronologically, so the simplest and visitors can have a visual feedback of the Minoan civilization, one of the most important civilizations of our planet.


   Today at the Museum of Heraklion thousands of visitors come from all parts of the world to witness this culture.
   To visit the tourism department of the Museum are at least two hours! Apart from the "tourist track" of the museum there are other sections, accessible only to scientists.
